Research has revealed that we can reduce anxiety, solve problems and even be more creative – all while we sleep.

It may sound too good to be true but the key, says sleep expert Clare Johnson, is learning the mysterious art of lucid dreaming.

A lucid dream is any experience in which you become aware that you’re dreaming during the REM stage of your sleep cycle.

You are still asleep but conscious enough to be aware that what is happening isn’t real.

“Have you ever been dreaming and suddenly realised what you’re experiencing isn’t real but not woken up?” says Dr Johnson, an expert in lucid dreams.

“Perhaps you changed what was happening in the dream or interacted with the characters in it.”

Neuroscientists at the University of Bern in Switzerland believe that because the brain is in a less rational state than when we are awake, lucid dreaming is the perfect environment for creative thinking.

“Dreams help you connect to your unconscious mind,” adds Dr Johnson.

“This can show us how we are really feeling and what we need to change in our lives. We can work out ideas and overcome fears and anxieties.”

Ditch the alarm

Jolting awake to a stressful alarm clock is the surest way to banish dreams.

So change your beeping alarm for one that plays a gentle song.

Set the alarm a few minutes earlier than needed and try to remember your dreams as you listen to the song.

If the song is always the same it will create an automatic response so when you hear the opening melody, your dream will automatically surface.

Over time, recalling your dreams will get progressively easier. 

Keep a dream journal

Get a notebook to use as your dream journal.

If you don’t have enough sleep at night, the body needs to catch up on dreaming sleep so when you nap you tend to have a light sleep filled with bizarre, vivid dreams.

This is a magical state of consciousness for all would-be lucid dreamers.

As the sleep is light, you can become lucid more easily and as the dreams are often strange, you’re more likely to notice you’re dreaming.

If an afternoon nap is impossible, wake up early in the morning, meditate, then return to bed determined to be lucid in your dreams.

This technique has a high success rate for lucid dreaming – a recent study in a sleep lab found that 50 per cent of people manage to become lucid when using it.

If the dream is connected to a current situation, move through any negative emotions and try to imagine possible solutions you can apply to your waking life.
